Hockworthy

Welcome to Hockworthy

The parish of Hockworthy, which includes the hamlets of Staplecross (where you will find the local pub, the Staple Cross Inn) and Waterslade, is an idyllic rural area with a strong sense of community.

Hockworthy’s name in Olde English means ‘Hocca’s Enclosure’. In Elizabethan England, enclosure was the practice of dividing up land which was once owned by the people, that was typically large open fields into smaller ‘enclosed’ pieces of land that instead belonged to one person only.

Things to do

  • You could have a unique glamping experience at Deer Barn Retreats in Hockworthy. This retreat still embodies elements of an off grid experience, but with access to amenities such as phone charging, comfy linen, tasty local produce and good bathrooms.
  • You could visit the parish Church of St Simon and St Jude, a beautiful Grade 2* church on a hill-side dating from 1161 or earlier (however, the tower was rebuilt in 1864 due to its poor condition). And, if you are interested, you can purchase a copy of the church history, which includes records of all the graves in the churchyard and of all burials since records began in Elizabethan times. Copies are available from Colden Publications, PO Box 22, Wiveliscombe TA21 2ZH.

Places to eat

  • The Staple Cross Inn is a cosy village pub, situated in Staple Cross (2 minute drive). They offer a full a la carte menu of traditional pub classics as well as lighter meals for those with smaller appetites, they have a pub garden too – perfect for those sunnier days!
