St Peter’s (Tiverton) Tower Open Day
St Peter’s ringers will open the bell tower once again this year as part of Heritage Open Days. Come and find out about the bells, the clock and how ringing is done. Take in the fine views of the town and the river from the roof of the tower (weather permitting). Watch how the bells are rung.
On Saturday 11th September the church will be open 10:00am – 4:30pm for displays about bells and bellringing, tours of the tower and refreshments. Tower tours run at: 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 and take an hour. There are about 100 steps to climb to the roof for the spectacular views over the town (weather permitting), so tours are not suitable for those with medical conditions or children under 8 years of age. You will also see the bells, the clock and ringing being performed.
This year, to keep COVID-safe, we must limit the number of tours and the size of tour groups, so please book tour places in advance at: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/st-peters-church-tiverton…. Each tour group is limited to a maximum of 8 people. Children 8 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
St Peter’s is a Grade I listed building, ‘a gorgeously ostentatious display of civic pride’ (Pevsner). Notable for stone vaulted ceilings to the porch and Greenway Chapel and external carved frieze of merchant ships. Interesting main church interior with chest tombs, Mayor’s Pew and splendid candelabra.
This event is free of charge and is being run as part of the Heritage Open Days. Refreshments available.
