Liznojan Books and Coffee is hosting Tiverton’s 5th Book Festival!

The Newte Library of St Peter’s Church in Tiverton was founded in 1716 from the private library of Reverend John Newte.

The Newte Library of St Peter’s Church in Tiverton was founded in 1716 from the private library of Reverend John Newte. Notable items include a late 15th-century illuminated Book of Hours and annotated political pamphlets from the 17th century, reflecting John Newte’s royalist leanings. It also contains a collection of books primarily focused on divinity, including bibles in ancient languages, sermons, including one published by Newte himself, and works of the church fathers.

The library’s significance lies in its historical context, offering insights into the religious and political landscape of the 17th and 18th centuries. It also provides rare evidence of the reading habits during the early modern period. The library is one of only four parish libraries in Devon founded before 1800 that still retains the bulk of its collection and remains in its parish church.

The library will be open to visitors from 3 to 5pm with cream tea’s available.
