English Tourism Week 2026: How Local Stories Are Driving National Growth in Mid Devon
As English Tourism Week 2026 begins (13–22 March), Visit Mid Devon is shining a spotlight on the contribution that our local tourism and hospitality businesses make to the region’s economy, culture and communities.
This year’s national theme, Local Stories, National Growth, couldn’t be more relevant to Mid Devon. Our visitor economy is built on the people, products and places that make the district unique—independent businesses, skilled makers, family‑run attractions, rural escapes, and vibrant market towns. Together, they form part of a much bigger national tourism story.
Tourism’s Impact on Devon and Mid Devon
Across Devon, tourism generates around £1.6 billion every year and supports over 50,000 jobs, equating to approximately 9% of all employment in the county.
Mid Devon plays a vital role in this success by:
- Encouraging visitors beyond traditional coastal hotspots
- Supporting year‑round tourism and rural resilience
- Boosting spend in town centres and local high streets
- Creating jobs in accommodation, food, retail, attractions and transport
- Showcasing the authentic Devon experiences visitors seek
Small and medium‑sized businesses remain the backbone of the sector—offering high‑quality experiences that inspire longer stays and repeat visits.
Championing Mid Devon’s Voice in the Visitor Economy
Mid Devon is part of Devon’s Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP), which strengthens collaboration across the county and aligns local priorities with national Visit England objectives.
This partnership ensures that destinations like Mid Devon:
- Are recognised for their contribution to England’s visitor economy
- Benefit from shared expertise, joint campaigns and training
- Are well positioned for future investment and sustainable growth
