Christmas Lights Switch-On Events in Mid Devon
Get into the Christmas spirit this weekend with Light Switch-On events across Mid Devon!
Christmas is fast approaching and as we enter this Advent season, our town centres are being decorated and shop windows festooned with lights, sparkle and festive scenes.
2021 sees a suite of Christmas events returning for shoppers, crafters, foodies and families to enjoy. Kicking off the merriment are a weekend of Christmas Light Switch-On events across the District:
Crediton
This year, Crediton’s Christmas Festival is themed “Santa’s Superheroes and features a children’s fancy dress competition and superhero logo hunt.
Date / Times:
Saturday 27 November, with entertainment in the Town Square starting from 1pm to get everyone in the festive spirit. The parade will assemble at the top of Market Street and finish in the Town Square ready for Father Christmas to turn on the twinkling lights in the town at 5pm. The entertainment will continue from some fantastic local musicians and singers until 6pm.

Additional Information:
- There will be food and drink on and around the square.
- The popular Christmas Express Land Train will be back again this year for rides around the town from 2pm (rides are £1per person).
- Santa’s Superhero fancy dress competition will take place at Crediton Methodist Church at 4pm. Children are invited to design a costume of their very own superhero, create and wear a cape or mask and dust off their superhero powers to showcase their creativity.
- The evening will also include the launching of the Christmas in Crediton children’s Superhero Hunt competition, which runs until 22 December. A specially designed superhero logo will be hidden in various places around the High Street. To take part, write down where you spot the numbered logo on the answer sheet (available on the Christmas in Crediton Facebook page or from the Crediton Courier and the Crediton Town Council offices) and hand in your answer sheet in at the Town Council office. There will be prizes for those who find the most logos.
Cullompton
This year, Cullompton is holding two Christmas events with the theme this year being ‘Victorian’.
Date / Times:
The lantern parade and light switch-on takes place on Saturday 27 November and a Santa’s Grotto event on Saturday 18 December.

The new-look festival will include carol singing, musical entertainment, workshops and will have a Christmas Market with craft stalls located in The Walronds garden and the award-winning Farmers’ Market in the Higher Bullring (adjacent to the War Memorial).
The ever-popular Santa’s Grotto will also be in The Walronds (18th December) where young people can meet this magical man in person. Mrs. Christmas and the North Pole elves will also be in attendance and will be checking Santa’s ‘Naughty or Nice’ book; if children have been good, they will receive a small gift.
Please note: Santa is a very busy fellow, particularly at this time of year and so bookings for his Grotto are required. Slots are limited so please see the Santa’s Grotto webpage for further information and to make your booking.

Tiverton
Tiverton’s light switch-on event takes place on Saturday 27 November. Music will be provided by Radio Exe from 5:00pm, with the light switch-on at 6:00pm concentrated by the Town Hall. This year will feature a snow machine and special illuminations!
Alongside the event, Tiverton Pannier Market is hosting a late-night Christmas Market until 8:00pm with 30+ stalls, including organic Christmas trees from Peach Hayne Organics.
A host of activities will get under way from 4pm, including streetfood with local trio Cheese Please Louise, The Pizza Box Devon and Thongsay Thai Catering (as well as the Market Café JB’s). Plus there is live music and an open arts and crafts session with Creative Mojo Mid Devon & West Somerset.

4:45pm – 5:15pm A selection of members of Tiverton Amateur Operatic Society will perform in the interval in Luis’ set
6:00pm Light switch-on
6:15pm – 7:15pm Tiverton Town Band will play a host of Christmas and popular songs.
Uffculme
Uffculme village is known for its fantastic Christmas lights set-up. Their switch-on event takes place on Saturday 27 November.
There will be a lantern parade from Pathfields, starting at 6:00pm, to the square with the lights being turned on at 7:00pm. Music, food, raffle and of course Father Christmas will all be present.
FREE Parking
Mid Devon District Council is providing free parking in the three main towns’ long-stay car parks on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas (27 November, 4, 11 and 18 December):

- Station Road (Forge Way), Cullompton
- Multi-Storey (Phoenix Lane), Tiverton
